Marlene Dietrich

Marlene Dietrich was a German-American actress and singer. After her performance in ‘The Blue Angel’, Dietrich found international fame and eventually became one of the highest-paid actresses of the era. Prior to her Hollywood film breakthrough, Dietrich acted on stage in Berlin during the 1920s. In the public eye, she was recognised for her bisexuality and androgynous film roles.

Dietrich re-invented herself throughout her career to maintain popularity. She was very popular amongst top fashion designers. She was an icon, her style, frequently copied by other stars.

Greta Garbo

Greta Garbo was a Swedish film actress, three times nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. Her first on screen performance, in ‘The Saga of Gosta Berling’, was recognised by chief executive of MGM, Louis B. Mayer. He went on to bring Garbo to Hollywood and she soon found fame in her first silent film.

In 1941, with twenty-eight films under her belt, Garbo retired aged 35. She chose never to return to screen, shunning publicity altogether.

Carloe Lombard

Carole Lombard (born Jane Alice Peters) was an American film actress who appeared in over 20 silent films and is best known for her roles in comedies. In 1934 she starred in the film Twentieth Century which saw her rise in popularity. She went on to appear in many comedies and dramas, becoming the highest-paid Hollywood actress in the late 1930s. At the height of her career, aged 33, Lombard was killed in a plane crash along with her mother in Nevada.
