During the Weimar
Republic, there were huge developments in arts and sciences in Germany. This
period was recognised as being the most advanced in science, technology,
literature, philosophy and art. Berlin was the focal point for all the intellects,
artists and innovators. Come 1918, German universities became open to Jewish
scholars and the demand on intellect rose even further. However, come 1933
and Hitler’s rise to power, many of the intellects and cultural figures fled
from Germany and some that chose to remain were arrested or detained in
concentration camps.
In architecture, the Bauhaus school of design was established as the leading centre for art and design. It was, however, closed by Nazi's in 1933. Many buildings in the USA mirror the Bauhaus as the designer's fled to this country and continued their work there.
In art, expressionism and the modernist movement were in full force. Artists such as Otto Dix rose to fame and created masterpieces during this time. Also, in literature, the work of writers such as Thomas Mann and Hermann Hesse became internationally recognised.
In theatre, the desire for cabaret entertainment grew and a strong entertainment industry was established. Berlin became a world leader in cinema, creating more films in Germany than the rest of Europe combined. In science, scientists as prestigious as Albert Einstein won Nobel Prizes in Germany. There were also huge advances in the motor industry as well as in communication.
