Christopher and His Kind

2011 BBC television film, Christopher and His Kind, depicts the life of author Christopher Isherwood’s life in 1930 Berlin.  The film is an adaptation of Isherwood’s autobiography, published in 1972. Popular British actor, Matt Smith, plays the role of Isherwood. To prepare for the role, Smith read his novels as well as watching footage of him and even travelling to the USA to meet with an old friend of Isherwood.

The plot of Christopher and His Kind loosely reflects that of Cabaret with ample focus on the political issues and implications of the rise of the Nazi party. Life in 1930s Berlin is honestly depicted and sheds light on the hardship that Isherwood and the people he met tolerated.
