Impressionism, Pointillism & Cubism

Impressionism

Paris, 1847. The art establishment rejected a group of alternative painters, so they decided to set up their own exhibition which was, at first mockingly, referred to as 'Impressionist'. The group of diverse artists included Monet and Renoir.

Typically, Impressionist paintings are those worked on quickly, with brushstrokes so hasty you can see them. Also, the subject of the artwork is usually a landscape and urban life scenes. A radical movement for it's time, Impressionist paintings are now widely appreciated and loved.

Pointillism

Pointillism is an art movement that stems from Impressionism. The form of pointillism is the painting of primary colours in tiny dots, layered to create secondary colours. Georges Seurat is closely associated with the movement, the term 'pointillism' was first used to refer to his style of artwork.

Cubism
Cubism was invented in the early 20th century by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in Paris. They wanted to capture two-dimension through geometric form of their subject. By breaking up the subject of the picture into sets of geometric shape, you are able to see from many different angles at the same time.

I love the fragmented, abstract effect of this method of painting. I love the brush strokes and detailed colours.
